From Pour to Perfect: Why Handmade Candles Need Time to Cure
A candle is not finished when the wax hardens
One of the most important parts of making a quality candle happens after the wax is poured. Although a candle may look solid within a few hours, the wax and fragrance need additional time to settle and bond properly. This resting period is commonly called curing.
Curing is one of the reasons handmade candle making requires patience. Lighting a candle too soon may prevent you from experiencing the fragrance and performance that the maker intended.
What happens during curing?
During candle making, wax is carefully melted before fragrance oil is incorporated. The mixture is then poured into a prepared vessel containing the correctly sized wick.
As the candle cools, the wax changes from a liquid into a solid structure. The fragrance becomes distributed throughout that structure, but the process does not necessarily end as soon as the surface feels firm. Allowing the candle to rest gives the wax and fragrance more time to stabilize together.
The appropriate curing time can vary depending on the wax blend, fragrance, vessel, and formula. That is why experienced candle makers test each combination instead of treating every scent exactly the same.
Why patience matters
A properly cured candle may provide a more developed fragrance experience when it is burned. Curing can also help the maker evaluate the candle’s appearance and performance before it reaches the customer.
However, curing alone cannot correct an unsuitable wick or an unbalanced formula. Quality candle making also requires accurate measurements, controlled temperatures, properly prepared vessels, careful wick selection, and repeated burn testing.
