Begin with a lighter fragrance experience
When trying a new fragrance, start small. Smell the product briefly instead of repeatedly, and give yourself time before making a decision.
At home, use the product in a well-ventilated area and begin with limited exposure. For a candle, this might mean choosing a smaller vessel or burning it for a shorter period while still following the candle’s safety instructions. With wax melts, begin with one small piece. For room spray, start with one light mist and allow it to settle.
Adding more fragrance is easy. Removing an overwhelming scent from a room can take much longer.
Consider the fragrance family
Different fragrance families create different experiences. Fresh linen, citrus, ozone, and light green notes often feel airy and clean. Vanilla, amber, wood, and bakery notes may feel warmer and richer. Florals can range from delicate to bold, while mint and eucalyptus blends may seem especially noticeable.
Reading scent descriptions before purchasing can help you identify notes you already enjoy—and ingredients or fragrance styles you prefer to avoid.
“Clean” does not mean identical for everyone
Thoughtfully selected fragrance oils can exclude ingredients a brand chooses not to use, but no fragranced product can be guaranteed comfortable for every individual.
