The First Burn Matters: How to Help Your Candle Burn Beautifully
Begin with a little patience
Lighting a new candle is one of life’s simple pleasures. The fragrance begins filling the room, the flame creates a comforting glow, and your space immediately feels more inviting. But did you know that the way you burn your candle for the first time can affect how it performs afterward?
During the first burn, allow the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the vessel before extinguishing the candle. This usually takes a few hours, depending on the candle’s size. Creating an even melt pool helps reduce tunneling—the hollow area that can form around the wick when only the center wax melts.
Always trim the wick
Before every burn, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch. A properly trimmed wick can help maintain a controlled flame and reduce excessive smoke, soot, and mushrooming at the tip.
Always let the candle cool completely before trimming or relighting it. Remove any wick trimmings or debris from the wax so they don’t interfere with the flame.
Choose a safe burning location
Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from drafts, children, pets, curtains, and anything flammable. Drafts from ceiling fans, open windows, and air vents may cause uneven burning or a flickering flame.
Never leave a burning candle unattended, and avoid burning it for longer than four hours at a time. Stop using the candle when approximately ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel to help prevent overheating.
